We may not recognize what some of our professed values look like when we are at the receiving end of their just application.
For instance, someone who claims almighty integrity as a personal value may not see integrity at play when he or she is being restrained or denied by someone else who in doing so is demonstrating integrity; the same way someone who claims to espouse punctuality may decry meanness when being punished for lateness.
The same applies to justice, equity, best practices, professionalism and so on. Some of these values sound cool flowing out of our mouths, when talking, or out of our hands in writing, but may not feel so when we are being made to pay for their just application by other people.
