Tribute to Mazi George Chima Okoro Orji – A Calm Spirit; A Gentle Soul
In a world full of turbulence, it is not often that one comes in close contact with someone like Mazi George Chima Okoro Orji, fondly known as Grandpa in my household. But when you do, you should cherish every moment with them because of the stability they bring to your life.
Undoubtedly, Granda lived to a very ripe old age, and his transition is indeed to glory, and a cause for celebration. His was a life well-lived. Yet, he will be forever missed, and sorely so, because he has left a big hole in our hearts that can only be filled by the divine.
People with his unique combination of spirit and soul are becoming rare. That is why he will forever be dear to our hearts.
I am pleased to have had him as a father-in-law. His unobtrusive personality is a breath of fresh air. Even without saying much, you felt his calm support, come rain or shine. There was no air about him—no sneer, no veneer.
In a milieu where denigrating someone else is a perfect subterfuge for those who want to divert attention from their own failings, it takes a great character to absorb bitter comments and yet show no sign of bitterness in attitude or resentment in their voice. That is another area where Grandpa Orji excelled while many flounder. He remained uncontaminated in his heart as he was in spirit.
Although Heaven gains with him now out of this hemisphere, yet his demise remains a loss, a gaping hole that will take an Aeon to fill.
We will miss his prayers.
We will miss his calmness.
We will miss his cheerfulness.
And I particularly will miss his cheery “Baba T!” that precedes every call.
With him, the phrase, ‘May his gentle soul rest in peace,’ is more than a cliché. It is a verity, as his spirit was really calm and his soul truly gentle.
Adieu Grandpa!
