Optimizing Your Blog Posts to Get the Green Yoast SEO Score for Your Pages

The world is gradually coming to terms with the fact that web and digital platforms are now integral to the new world order fostered by Covid-19. Buzzwords such as Zoom, eCommerce, web presence and digital footprints are having greater meaning to us and becoming part of our everyday realities, social and business engagements than they have ever been. As such, it has become important that web presence for individuals and corporate entities must merit its name and be deployed the way it should be done.

As online business activities have continued to increase rapidly, a lot of brands have created a presence for themselves on the internet to connect with their customers. Consequently, it has made the competition for online visibility very much tougher than it was at the advent of the internet.

One of the fads that have also crept into our vocabulary before the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly among those whose interests in online endeavours are above average, is SEO (Search Engine Optimization). SEO is a loose term that describes all you do online, offline and in between to ensure that popular search engines such as Google, Bing, Baidu and Yandex crawl your site and display your post for web users who are looking for information related to your web post. This is called optimizing your blog posts. An SEO-strong post gets displayed on the first page of search engines while those that are not SEO compliant are displayed on the latter pages, possibly out of sight of users who usually do not go beyond the first five pages of search results.

Therefore, having your web posts SEO-strong such that it displays on the first page of Google search means that your site will have good organic traffic along with its benefits. These include sales, patronage, sign-ups, awareness, domain authority, etc. Apart from publishing quality content, there are various tools you can deploy to optimise your site and/or its content for easy indexing by search engines. Some of the popular ones are Yoast SEO, All-in-one-SEO, SEMrush, Ahrefs and so on. While you will need to use different tools for different SEO objectives, depending on whether you are doing onpage, offpage or technical SEO, the tool I find easiest and perhaps most straightforward to use for onpage SEO is Yoast. This is the tool that applies to your web post and blog content. Yoast helps you to optimise your blog posts.

Yoast is a WordPress SEO plug-in with features that helps to analyse your website posts and rank them based on how well your content has been presented. It ensures that you make the necessary tweaks that increase your visibility to the search engines and ultimately to your audience. Yoast grades the quality of your content in three levels. A red dot appears if your content needs to be improved while an amber dot signifies that your content quality is okay but could be better. The green dot means that your web content is top-notch and will rank better than the many other billions of content available on the internet. An ash coloured dot may also appear to show that your post has no focus keyword.

You could get a green score if you put several factors into consideration. Some of these are highlighted below. You could follow these for every post you create:

1. Have a keyword or phrase you are writing about; there should be a particular phrase that summarizes what you have.

2. Insert your keyword or phrase in the appropriate tab for keyword. Don’t make the mistake of inserting your keyword somewhere else. This may be why you are still having the red score.

3. Let your keyword/phrase be in the headline. It should be the first thing in your post and as such, should be found in the headline.

4. Ensure that your keyword/phrase is in the permalink. Visibility has to do with every detail and even your permalink should carry your keyword.

5. Put your keyword/phrase in the first line of the first paragraph.

6. Let your keyword or phrase appear between 2-5 times in the body of your writing, depending on the length of your essay. This would give reference to the key phrase as many times as possible.

7. Do not overuse your keyword or phrase in the body of your essay (keyword stuffing). That you need reference does not mean the key phrase should occur too many times.

8. Be creative. Do not overuse a particular keyword on your site posts. Make your topics and subjects diversified.

9. Insert hyperlinks to a similar or relevant essay on your site in your writing. Similar essays, when referred to using hyperlinks, will add more visibility and credibility to your post.

10. Insert hyperlinks to a similar or relevant topic on another credible site in your writing.

11. Let your keyword or phrase be in the meta description tab.

12. Ensure that your keyword or phrase appears in the slug. (This is usually automatic, but check to be sure).

13. Ensure your headline isn’t longer than necessary. (Yoast will indicate.)

14. Ensure your meta description isn’t longer than necessary (Yoast will tell you this.)

15. Tag your keyword or phrase and other important names/features in your essay.

16. Let your keyword or phrase appear in the ALT name of your image.

17. Make sure your keyword or phrase appears in the description tab of your image.

18. Ensure your image is at least 300×500 pixels for it to display at all on Facebook.

Complying with seven to eight of these key points helps in optimising your blog posts. Thus, you get a green dot. This means that your content is well on the way to being discovered online.
